Why is it that records like this are so hard to come
by? So many modern recordings are void in passion, and a lingering sense
of musical unfulfillment follows soon after. Thankfully, California based
musician Jessica Peters (aka Petracovich) offers us a weighty and sugar
filled experience with her Blue Cotton Skin debut. She believes in her
music so much that she launched her own recording label (Red Buttons)
to put it out. The first obvious question is ‘what’s with
the name?’ Well, Peters’ great-grandfather’s name was
Abraham Petracovich, who came to the States from Russia in 1905. He was
known to say, ‘We couldn’t do this in Russia. You shouldn’t
take this for granted, being able to listen to music whenever you want.’
On a side-note, because of my Christian background I must point out that
the Petra from Petracovich does indeed mean rock! Well, let’s get
to the music. Peters makes what might be best described as under-the-radar
dream pop heavily supported by her laptop beats and craftfully interspersed
Aimee Mann, Bjork and Portishead influences. Blue Cotton Skin borders
on trip-hop at times, but is grounded with ethereal and sensuous vocals
and musicianship. The conceptual twist of this record puts it in a class
of its own. This is a very rewarding listening experience. - gtj |
