Artist in Town - Dark Music Glows Bright

Jessica Peters, aka Petracovich, on writing trip-hoppy ‘stuff’

“When I started, my song writing was more. . . Bland, I guess,”  says Jessica Peters.  “But after getting bored, I borrowed a synthesizer from my cousin and it was so fun.”  The result is a the folky, electronic Petracovich.  So far, critics love her album, blue cotton skin.  We see if she lover her critics, reading her the reviews.

* The Santa Barbara Independent said: “An eerie cross between Bjork’s slower cuts, Portishead’s perpetual hum, and Mazzy Star’s spaceyness.”

** It’s pretty accurate, but Bjork was the only one I listened to before doing the album.  I’m flattered.  I tend to write mellow stuff.
* Here’s one from Alter Native, a Web site: “Unfortunately for Ms. Peters this is likely to stay underground.”

**  It’s funny when it says “unfortunately.” It makes me feel negative!  It’s not mainstream-friendly.  Its underground and I’m comfortable with that culture.”

*  LA Weekly says:  “Slightly like Tangerine Dream playing with a Lite-Brite in a hidden attic.”

** I love that one.  The idea of being by yourself in a dark space making something glowy - I loved that.

*  “It’s garbage! I hate it!”
**  [Laughs]  What’s that from?

*  Well, I made that one up.

**  The thing is,  There’s definitely people who - its not their kind of music.  We played in New York the other night and a bunch of people left.  I was like, “Wow.  If they didn’t lik that song, there’s nothing I can do.”
