Petracovich San Francisco based singer/songwriter Jessica Peters
records as Petracovich, a nod to her pre-American surname. If that weren't
cozy enough, she releases records on her Red Buttons label, referencing
the name of the cow she owned as a child. Despite these personal touches,
it isn't easy getting a handle on the individual behind her folktronica
pop. There's trip-hoping Aimme Mann on "Summer Trees," plaintive
Mann on "Telephone" and a bit of a Jon Brion-esque Mann on "What
If I Came To Get You." Unexpectedly, lovely vocal-free incidentals
"Sparrows On 4th Street" and "Swallows on 8th Street"
provide the most fruitful listening. Whether playing kalimba, synth or
bells, Peters has a knack for textural complexity, and she and co-producer
Tad Wagner endow these 14 tracks with dreamy, playful arrangements. It's
no knock to say Petracovich remains downright familiar even after the
exegesis: Peters wields a gorgeous voice that Mann freaks should love. |
